  1. Dear Masoud,

I hope this email finds you well.

I am contacting you from the Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art (GIBCA). The biennial’s 8th edition opened on September 12th

For GIBCA 2015, titled A story within a story…, curated by Elvira Dyangani Ose, GIBCA and the Public Art Agency Sweden are collaborating on the site-specific project called House of Words (HoW) – a temporary pavilion designed by architect Santiago Cirugeda – Recetas Urbanas and activated by artist Loulou Cherinet. Throughout the biennial HoW will function as the central social platform and meeting place. (**see below for further information).

It is within this context that we would like to extend an invitation for you to participate in a round-table dinner conversation inside of HoW that will be centered around the topic of “Community & Participatory Politics ” on Wednesday September 30th (6-8pm). We are inviting a mixed group of people from near and far to come and talk about their thoughts and experiences with regards to deconstructing the individual’s role in a collective act; focusing on democracy, political identity, power relations, and participatory decision-making.

We would be honoured to have you participate and feel that your breadth of knowledge as a writer and poet combined with your experience as an activist would be extremely enlightening and relevant to the conversation.

    Terms of participation
The core of HoW is to function as a space for storytelling. What we ask from our participants is not to prepare any talks, papers or present specific perspectives, but simply to think of a story to tell, related to the topic, that touches on their professional and personal interests and experiences. We will eat dinner together and every participant at the table will share a personal story. As such, the conversation can go in many directions and will not be moderated like in a traditional panel discussion. We hope that this will allow a relaxed openness and spontaneity, like the one you would have in a private dinner setting among friends. The format of the conversational setting is part of the overall methodology conceived by Loulou Cherinet and thus part of her artwork. The conversation will be video recorded, edited and uploaded to a online platform accessible for all, as well as for a video archive accessible for all visitors to HoW during the biennial.

Below is a list of the additional people we are inviting for the session in HoW. The list is preliminary and potentially subject to changes.

Karolina Bregula – Polish Multimedia Artist
Andrea Philips – PARSE Professor of Art and Head of Research at the Valand Academy, University of Gothenburg
Hans Abrahamsson – Guest Professor of Global Political Studies, Malmö Högskola (TBC)
Angela Muvumba Sellström – Uppsala University phD Candidate, Department of Peace and Conflict Research
Petra Baur / Rebecka Thor – GIBCA 2015 Artists

We are offering all participants the same symbolic flat rate fee of 999 sek and will cover your travel and accommodation if you live outside of Gothenburg.

I hope you find the invitation interesting enough to consider! Should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
I look forward to hearing from you!

    With kind regards,

    Michelle Boynton

**House of Words refers to “la Casa de la Palabra” – a traditional meeting place common in some African societies providing a hub for oral history, storytelling, performance, and ritual. HoW’s function will be to provide a setting for multidisciplinary discussion, exchange, and collaboration throughout the course of the biennial. Its construction, led by Santiago Cirugeda, will consist of a collective process engaging individuals and local communities from Gothenburg and elsewhere to build HoW together. Within HoW artist Loulou Cherinet will create a relational community project, engaging individuals and communities in a series of conversations set in the format of filmed roundtable storytelling sessions. Cherinet’s project will be complemented by a public program curated in collaboration with curator Elvira Dyangani Ose addressing ideas about how participatory practices may create an activated social space.
